Anyone have experience with going to view the fireflies in the first part of June? Besides Elkmont anywhere else to go? Any information is welcome, thanks!

i would tell you to try to get a campsite at Elkmont, but it's probably too late. the firefly event has become so popular it's really too much of headache to try to get to Elkmont during that time. you have to buy tickets, wait in line at Sugarlands to get on a shuttle that takes you there and back. the synchronous bugs do their thing in a two-week window that park biologists try to guess ahead of time. during that two-week window you can't get to Elkmont unless you're camping there that night, or if you come by the park's shuttle. but, of course it's not an exact science.
the Elkmont display is impressive if you can catch it right, but they say the synchronous bugs occur all over the park but most commonly at a certain elevation. I forget what it is, but whatever Elkmont's at. if it were me, I'd study the map and pick out a backcountry site that's near a creek at the Elkmont elevation.
I found the information about buying the shuttle tickets. Just by the way they go about selling them I guessed the demand must be insane.
