I'm in the process of completing my first DIY project. I'm doing a 66"x45" UQ with Climashield 5 oz and 1.1 oz ripstop. I'll gladly share pictures once complete. The main reason for me posting isn't just to announce my introduction to the DIY gear obsession, but to share some of my research. One problem encountered was accurate weight predictions. The main issue is 1.1 oz ripstop weights 1.1 oz per Square Yard (36"x36"), not per yard you purchase (typically 36"x60"). Same thing with Climashield. I wanted to make sure that I took weight and coverage into account when choosing my size. Here's the weights of the various sizes I considered :
60x42
1.94 Sq Yards
CS 9.7 oz
RS 4.27 oz
Total 13.97 oz
66x42
2.14 Sq Yard
CS 10.7 oz
RS 4.7 oz
Total 15.4 oz
66x45
2.29 Sq Yard
CS 11.45 oz
RS 5.04 oz
Total 16.49 oz
66x48
2.44 Sq Yard
CS 12.2 oz
RS 5.37 oz
Total 17.57 oz
72x42
2.33 Sq Yard
CS 11.65 oz
RS 5.13 oz
Total 16.78 oz
72x45
2.5 Sq Yard
CS 12.5 oz
RS 5.5 oz
Total 18.0 oz
72x48
2.66 Sq Yard
CS 13.3 oz
RS 5.85 oz
Total 19.15 oz
Keep in mind this only takes into account the ripstop and climashield as I couldn't find accurate information on shock cord or gross grain.
For me the 66x45 gave me the best combination of comfort vs weight. Hopefully others can use this as a guide for making their own decisions. Pictures of the completed project will follow.
