My son and I are planning a trip to Lake Katherine in New Mexico's Santa Fe National Forest. We are looking to go middle of May. What is the weather like in May? Should we plan for snow/heavy rain?
Thanks.

May isn't a particularly wet month but it does sometimes rain/snow. At that time of year if it's raining down in Santa Fe it will most likely be snowing up high near Lake K which is ~11700'. You definitely want rain gear and you can expect below freezing temps at night regardless of whether it rains/snows. You will likely encounter some snow banks (maybe deep) on the trail up high, especially on the northern aspects. Creeks in the area may be running high from snow melt. Suggest you contact the SFNF (http://www.fs.usda.gov/santafe/) for trail conditions a little closer to your trip. They publish a pretty good map of the Pecos wilderness here: http://www.nationalforestmapstore.co...ct-p/nm-18.htm. Plan well and enjoy your trip, it's a nice time of the year to be in the mountains.
Thank you Arg.
