Well that settles it. Hot water bottle for the main, hand warmers in reserve for strategic spots, and tealight candle lantern for mood lighting. Thanks for taking the time to provide all the advice and opinions folks! Wish me luck in my first venture into the Cold & Mystic White next week.

    Cheers,
    Mickey

Good luck! Bring extra wool blankets in the car just in case!

I don't care if its "organic" or from some really cool exotic honey bee...soot is soot.
Not maybe but absolutely in a snow-cave. Added bonus: While it does eat some oxygen, a paraffin candle's flame will be small at 17-15% O2 and goes out around 15%. At 15%-10% O2 levels a person is fatigued and bad tempered--hard to know if it's from oxygen or other factors and O2 levels become dangerous at less than 10%. So the candle is your canary in the snow-cave, so-to-speak.

But since you aren't in a snow-cave: Nah. And they would be prohibited during fire bans (Sternos excluded).

I have an argon vented winter over cover from Dutch. It covers the hammock fully and acts as a good underquilt protector too. That coupled with my superfly pitched low does a great job of warding off the wind and keeping the body heat in. The vent helps with condensation and you could supplement it with a Shug-style condensation bib to help a bit more with keeping your sleeping gear condensation free.

Weeeeelllll. The guy hosting the outing is actually a Wilderness Education Instructor, and promises to teach us how to build emergency snow shelters if there's snow. It's in upstate NY and it's also supposed to snow all week prior to the trip.

    Cheers,
    Mickey

    This ^^^^^
Tea candles really aren't going to give you any benefit in this type of cold unless you used like 50 of them. Then your flaming tarp should provide a quick source of heat.
But seriously, hot water bottle is the way to go!

Awesome! A great skill to have and they are fun to make (as is snow furniture). PM me if you'd like any info on snow-cave gear setup.

I am envious of the East's (mountain) snow. The Cascades look like May. Our skis and snowshoes sit idle.

Zippo makes a hand warmer that burns for 12+ hours. I hang one around my neck to help heat my core... Even when hiking(sometimes)
