    Ok, picture this.......

11' hammock, endless loops in the channels, 12' tree straps with Marlinspike hitches w/toggles. Just place the endless loop over the MSH like you would a whoopie sling. Anybody tried this? And, if you use sticks for toggles, it's a totally metal free system! Of course you would lose a little on the "ease of adjustment" part of the equation, but it's lightweight and simple.

Haven't tried it but there's no reason it wouldn't work. I'd think whoopie slings would be lighter than the straps, but I haven't done the math.

I'm not a gram weenie so a few oz either way wouldn't bother me, although I could see the UL guys having issues with this.

You could also double wrap the endless loop twice through the channel(or around the whipping) to take up some length and tie the MSH an inch away from the tree. It would really cut down on the distance needed between trees. I think I'll try it this weekend.

Of course cinch buckles kinda serve the same purpose but I'm trying to get away from any metal in my suspension. Don't get me wrong, I love my whoopie slings, but there's always something better. Dutch proves that all the time!

The only thing I might do is add a slider on the continuous loop. Could be as simple as a small loop of cord. Slide it up to choke the loop after you put it over the toggle so it does not slip down when not loaded. Other than that I think it's a fine idea. I don't think you will find the weight penalty is significant.
    YMMV

Progress and innovation both come from asking "why not?", not "why?"

Makes sense. Same adjustability without the middleman of a cinch buckle. But man oh man do I love my Dutch Ti Buckles!

What about the water break? Maybe use a knoted strip of cloth as the suggested loop above. Water would run down the strap to the continuous loop to the cloth and be wicked away.

I actually like this idea for winter camping if it stays cold enough not to have freezing rain. I find it easy to make a figure 4 no matter what. It might be a little hard to fine tune the hang having to tie and retie the MSH.

I'm trying cinche buckles for the winter to help with having gloves on and prevent water freezing from compromising the bury. I find having to to thread the strap through the buckles each time with gloves is just as bad as whoopies. My strap also seems to role in half within the buckle when adjusting. I have the new camo straps from dutch and they seem a lot softer than my black tree huggers. I think this might be the issue but have not heard others complain. I'm going to take both sets next week to the Ohio winter hang to try them out.
