    Silnylon uq

Ok, Im trying to decide on an uq. Ive read that you should not have silnylon because it wont breathe. But at the same time, people suggest that you get an uq protector made of silnylon or like material, to protect from wind and water. I dont understand...

The UQP only gets used during certain situations, not all the time, and I believe you hang them at least slightly loose so that there is room between the UQP and UQ to prevent condensation issues.

No you want breathable in both the UQ and that of the UQP in nearly all cases.

Special circumstances do exist for the use of waterproof though

I think 2qzq's advice on their web page sums it up:

"The UQP in Silnylon will keep the underquilt dry. It can also be used as a vapor barrier between hammock and underquilt. Please note that Silnylon, being waterproof and non breathable, can create condensation in the underquilt depending on temperature and humidity and precautions may need to be taken to avoid it. If you’re unsure about condensation issues and how to avoid it, we recommend the breathable ripstop UQP version."

Put me firmly in the unsure camp, so I'd stick with a breathable UQP.

I've kind of split the middle on that and gave my UQP a light coating of Campmor to add some water/wind repellent. Works great in the high & dry Northern Rockies, but I doubt that I'd do it in southern climates where you live.
