As for the Spindrift... I've used mine quite a bit this winter, and haven't had any issues at all. Maybe because I use my trekking poles as spreaders, and make sure the holes are aligned with the amsteel?

Do you feel that the grommets are really needed in the first place?

Something is needed to keep the hole you cut in the fabric from fraying, someone mentioned a button hole, this could work as well, but that takes a specialized machine generally. Anything like that (button hole, tiny grommet etc, that gets tension applied to it) is likely to have issues, the thing to do is to make sure there's not any tension on it in the first place which is the route we decided to go to fix the issue
