    Nylon only sock

Any advantage to having just a nylon sock? Any insulative value in that or is it a waste of weight/effort?

    Thanks.

Certainly a sock adds warmth. As much as 10ºF, depending.

I was thinking about making a full sock out of 1.1 or 1.9 rs with a triangular panel of noseeum over the "head" to help with moisture.

Wonder how much temp difference it would make.

I've measured about 10F depending on conditions. Aside from the measurable temp, though, it blocks the wind from stealing the heat from your insulation by creating more dead air space.

I've draped all kinds of things over my ridgeline in the winter. Usually it's the stock HH tarp or a mil-surplus poncho. This winter I might try an insulated space blanket. Even the bugnet works well enough at cutting down the air that gets into the hammock... it's all worthwhile when the weather gets cold.

I've only used a Hennessy Over cover but it seemed to add 5 or 10 degrees. I now have a no net hammock and plan to make a sock using Jeff's recipe. Others here have posted excellent results with a sock and something like a Macat Deluxe, almost making a "winter " tarp supperfulous.

I would like to make one like shug uses in his video, where it only covers the bottom, i dont need one on top as my tarp covers that, i just wanna protect my underquilt from the splash if im camping above rocks, or hard dirt, thats all. Plus i dont want the extra weight of a huge one, when i only need one for the bottom. If someone has directions of one, to make for the bottom half of a blackbird, please post. thanks!

I know this thread is a few months old, but I THINK this is kind of relative...

So I've got sleeping bag converted to a peapod kind of set up now and I am wanting to make a sock of sorts. My idea is to make "sock" out of the 1.something oz coated nylon that I picked up at WalMart. that slides over my pod once I'm in. It wouldn't cover up the head opening so breathe-related condensation won't be a problem. As well, I was thinking that I could add a CCF pad for added warmth. Ideas, advice, problems with it? Thanks guys!

I think you'll want part of the sock to cover underneath your head and shoulders, rather than stopping where you snug it up around your shoulders. Might at least want an extension on the bottom or you'll risk losing a lot of heat.

Also don't want "coated" ripstop b/c it's not breathable...you'll be putting a vapor barrier around your insulation, which will make all of your body moisture turn your insulation into a sponge. Not useful. You want the DWR, not silnylon or coated, for a hammock sock.
