Help setting up a 1-tree backyard hang

Hi Everyone,

I recently moved and am looking to get my gear set-up in my new backyard, but there isn't a super easy or obvious hanging solution. I'm hoping you folks can give me some suggestions.

I am renting, so I'm limited to how much I can change, but my landlord is pretty easy going, so I can add/modify the existing set-up somewhat.

Here is what I have to work with:

My observations:

I Think the distance between the tree and the post (Flower pot gallows??) is enough for a hang - I haven't actually tested/measured this is any way.

As it stands, I'm pretty sure the post would not be able to handle the lateral forces from a suspension.

The fence is not a viable anchor. It isn't of any great quality and a bit wobbly.

I was thinking of making a guyline-like support from the pole to the ground - perhaps using one of the fence posts as an anchor, right where it exits the ground, for extra support.


Any suggestions are appreciated!

Maybe install 2 posts into ground 15 feet apart. Three or four feet into ground about 6x6 inches by 10 or 11 feet or Make two movable tripods connected by a cross bar like a turtle dog or turtle lady stand. Search for this in Hammock Forums Good luck

See the links, basically you can use a chain link fence top rail ($12) to take up the compression load leaving 1/2 the weight for each support. Figure out what you need to hold it up - what you have available supplemented with a tri-pod for the other end).

I have a 1 tree spot that I hang one end of the top rail from the tree and the other end is held up with a tri-pod. This method is very stable. Here's how I made the tri-pod:

Either concrete a good post in or build a "Turtledog" stand for a couple bucks and forget the tree. It stinks, but as a renter, might be only solution. Plus then you have something portable you can take with you. Nice back yard though!

+1 on the turtledog stand. I have built a pair of them for my son and I, and it's nice to be able to take them with when car camping just in case.

Nobody has actually come right out and said it, but if you read between the lines you can see everyone is in agreement that the existing post would likely be dangerous to hang from. Ergo all the alternative suggestions. The single strut and guy line method will likely come in as the cheapest option, and it isn't quite as permanent as pouring concrete.

Your least expensive and safest would be to sink a 10 foot 6X6 about 15 feet from the tree.A turtle dog stand will cost about 2xs as much and will not be as easy to use. Dig a 3 foot deep hole drop in the 6X6, square it up with a little gravel, pour in a couple bags of quickcreat and water, finish off with the dirt you dug out and the next day you are hanging.

How far apart is the building to the tree? If it is over 12 ft. then it should be easy.

Use the existing tree as one point and go up to hollyburn or somewhere where you can get 4 poles. Three at about eight feet long for the tripod as your second point and one about 12'-14' long to go from the tree to the tripod. you lash all of this together. You haven't spent any money.

It is hard to tell the quality of the post, but assuming it is up to par for hanging, then you could go buy a single 2x12 from lowes and attach it from post to tree for your lateral support. If you do the hole and post option, you could always just have it set 4-6" below soil level so when you move you just cut it off at the base and bury the concrete.
