Raiffnuke, Stormtrooper(my 15 y/o son Caelan) and myself headed up to Fishbrook Pond in NY Friday morning. We hit the trail at noon and started out and stayed on well groomed snowmobile trails all the way to the pond. That however does not mean that it was easy. Coming in two of us were pulling pulks. I was also carrying my pack as well. Almost 900' uphill within 1/2 to 3/4 of mile. After that the trip got easier. Took us about 4 hours to cover the 4 miles in. After that it was as relaxing as we could make it. Temps were to get around 2* overnight on Friday and 0* on Saturday night. Not bad for my sons first winter backpacking trip. After securing some wood for the fire and starting up the dueling whisper lites we had dinner. Packet gourmet was well received and enjoyed that evening. Texas state chilli for me, Dotties Chicken and Dumplings for Raiffnuke and Stormtrooper had the beef burrito.
We all all hit the hammocks early. 8pm. And it wasn't even a school night. Stormtrooper had an XLC with topcover two Hammock gear under quilts, a 0* incubator and a 20* Phoenix. It was suppose to get down to -6 but never went that cold.
.Raiffnuke had a Dutch argon Hammock with Dutch sock. He can post the rest of his setup. I had a ridgerunner with full length winter lynx and HG winter burrow.
Non of us crawled out before 8am. Zzzzzzzzzzz
The rest of the day was relaxing. I got in some bushcrafting in. I brought in a 24" saw blade and with and axe and knife I made the rest. I really enjoyed the process. Product needed some work but was functional. Cooked come venison stew and some Bannock on the fire and unfortunately watched 45+ snowmobilers rip around the lake in a club meeting for a good part of the afternoon. Once they all left silence and the beauty came back in full.
Hit the hammocks again around 8pm after some, more good food and a great fire and slept for another twelve hours. Zzzzzzzzzzz. After that we got up and headed back out for a 2 hour journey to the car. What a awesome trip.
Having said that I got my winter trip in, now bring on spring and warmer weather. I have done a lot of camping this winter. With this trip, out of the 8 weekends of the new year, I have camped in 5 of them. Totalling 15 nights. Most hitting below zero to -12* with one or two hitting positive single digits.
