Sometimes if the air's too chilly in the middle of the night I've shifted to sleep on my side, with my face on the hammock, breathing through it, topquilt over my head. This will leave a bunch of condensation on the hammock, though. Probably not ideal to do that for the entire night.

I do as well. Keeps my face warmer when its really cold out and blocks out the light. I use a 32 degree Ozark trail bag but I`m looking to get a down top quilt eventually.

When it's cold enough for me to want to dig in, I favor just putting something on my head. That way when I have to make midnight exits my head is still cozy.

At home I tunnel under the covers, with just a carefully placed gap for air.
But hammocking, I just wear a fleece balaclava over my wool watch cap and that satisfies my need for burrowing.

Wow, I am surprised at the number of responses to my musing. If the weather is really cold, I also wear a balaclava and polartec cap, but find that I still snuggle up under the hood of my bag. I have considered using a Shemagh/Keffiyeh.
It would be nice to see if some top quilt manufacturer would design a quilt with a pull over hood with adjustable "port hole" or breathable fabric.

When I initially fall asleep I do however I toss and turn at night so I never wake up with it over my head. I also sleep with something overy my mouth so I don't wake up with a layer of frost on my TQ which has happened to me a couple of times.
Sometimes I like to hike and think, And sometimes I just like to hike.

Hiking is'ent about waiting for the storm to pass its about learning to hike in the rain.

I don't own a down TQ yet ,"YET". On cold winter nights I i have a 0 deg. Synthetic
Sleeping bag that I use as a top quilt and cover my face and vent as needed.Been out with temps as low as 8 deg. Never had problems with condensation .

I do, but not for extended periods of time. Certainly not the whole night. I tend to get cold via my face, so I make a vented tunnel so that my breath has somewhere to go.

I do if the temps are 45* and below. I have a down top quilt and only once have I noticed any sort of condensation. It got below freezing and when I woke, I noticed just a slight bit on the outside of my quilt, where my head was. I'm normally a back sleeper, but occasionally, I will turn on my side, in a fetal position and bury myself head to toe under my quilt. it has to be really cold, though. I guess I just don't tolerate a cold face.

I don't like not being able to breathe freely, even if it's cold, and I'm afraid of condensation in the quilt. So, I wear a balaclava with ample ports for my nose and mouth. That with a warm ski cap keeps my noggin warm and my quilt dry.

I just received my UGQ Down hat for really cold temps. Nice!
