Beyond Backpacking is something every hiker should read. I don't agree with everything Jardine says but that book changed how I look at my pack.

The Complete Walker was another good one.

And of course Ed's Hammock Camping book. All three already listed!

I read all kinds of trail journal style books, too...mostly all interesting but nothing was "must read" except for Bill Bryson's piece of half-fiction. I laughed out loud so many times that I don't care whether he finished or not.
“Republics are created by the virtue, public spirit, and intelligence of the citizens. They fall when the wise are banished from the public councils because they dare to be honest, and the profligate are rewarded because they flatter the people, in order to betray them.” ~Judge Joseph Story

I have to agree, the Camping and Wildernesss Survival book buy Paul Tawrell has more information on Backcountry survival than any other source I've seen.

Don't forget the New Boy Scout handbook.

The ray Jardine ultralight hiking book is pretty good. Also the complete walker is a great reference. Peter Jenkins Walk across America is a great one to get you out into the wilds.

I read the Complete Walker years ago. Seems bi-polar to Ray Jardines' book. The Complete Walker seemed to have you carrying everything under the sun. Does the new Complete Walker lighten up a bit ?

'Lighten Up' A Complete Handbook for Light and Ultralight Backpacking by Don Ladigin, illustrated by Mike Clelland. The illustrations make the book really fun to read and add a lot of additional information.

'The Ultralight Backpacker' by Ryel Kestenbaum is another good one.

'Hiking the Triple Crown' by Karen Berger covers the three long trails, but it also has a lot of good general hiking/backpacking info too.

For bicycle touring read all three of Joe Kurmaskie's books, 'Metal Cowboy', 'Riding Outside the Lines' and 'Momentum is Your Friend'.

Beast 71 - I just finished re-reading '1984' for about the tenth time.

Another non-camping book I like is 'Walden Two' by B. F. Skinner. I re-read it every few years.
