    Chago, nice report. I see you found cattail falls. you must of had some good intel for that one.
    It's great to see some of y'all lengthening your stay. Chago's last line pretty much sums it up for me. It's a beautiful place that I can't really describe why I keep going back time and time again. To most it appears to just be a vast wasteland, but to me and so many others it has an allure and romance that is everlasting.
    I've made two trips to Death Valley for the same reason. DV is even bigger and I know each trip will reveal more beauty so I don't try to cram too much in each trip.
    For those that can do the river, it's a real treat. I did mariscal over three days and two nights through far flung. It was truly amazing. Desert sports is another excellent outfitter in Terlingua. I've always wanted to do a long trip that included santa elena, mariscal and boquillas canyon.......that's on the bucket list.....
    For those staying longer and wanting to do more backpacking, I'd look into the dodson trail. It's another one on my list. Also, the rancherias loop in state park. It would make a nice two night trip. It's across the road from closed canyon mentioned before.

    Hmm...too big, and too straight to have grown there. Old utility poles, I'm guessing.

    Now, if they would only set them on 15' centers.

    after digging up this photo (again) I'll have to see just how I'd might do this but using bamboo instead. we got it here in the RGV so I'll have to do some digging around and find a source for it. I can imagine a big ol' pile of it tied into a roll and lashed onto my roof for the trip into bb.

    If I am understanding correctly, y'all are leaving NC Thur AM, which will put you at BBNP midday on Fri? If so, I am planning to arrive mid afternoon on Fri and stay until Wed.

    Here is my tentative itenerary;
    Fri 3/5 - Arrive, setup camp, hangout
    Sat 3/6 - Hiking and/or backpacking (possibly overnight)
    Sun 3/7 - Hiking and/or backpacking
    Mon 3/8 - Terlingua, Lajitas, and BB Ranch SP. Pick up canoes.
    Tue 3/9 - Mariscal Canyon float trip. To make this work, we need someone to dive pickup from Talley to Solis to pick up floaters. Other option is to take guided trip with their shuttle.
    Wed 3/10 - AM departure - drop off canoes in Terlingua

    I am being optimistic about my schedule but could have to trim it by a day.

    I have emailed Far Flung and Big Bend River Tours. They are both based out of Terlingua. There is a possibility that we could take a guided trip without having to go to Terlingua, since we would virtually back track almost back to RGV.

    Got a reply back from one river outfitter;

    Scott, the road to Mariscal has been in terrible condition lately, so we have not been doing many of those canyon trips. However, I’m willing to offer a day trip into Mariscal (most likely by canoe in the spring) with the following understanding:
    Trip must have a 10 person minimum to run.
    Participants understand that trip most likely will be by canoe.
    We can offer pick-up and drop off service at RGV.
    The put-ins and take-outs require a lot of effort in getting equipment to and from the river, so we would need participants help.
    Price would be $160/person plus sales tax and would include the pick-up service, lunch, guides, equipment and waterproof bags.
    All of this is still conditional on the premise that the road will be passable in March. It should be, but I won’t go down there with a group smaller than 10 as it is too hard on my equipment.

    I don't know if 10 people is possible. Plan A was to rent some canoes the day before, while touring Terlingua and Lajitas. For this to work someone to drive my truck from the dropoff (Talley) to the pickup (Solis). I'm sure I can haul two or three canoes on my truck. I can return them on my way out.
