Dutch's DIY Hammock Giveaway Build Thread

Hello all,

I won Dutch's DIY Hammock Giveaway. I received my new sewing machine today! With the remainder on the Amazon gift card, I ordered a paperback copy of Derek's Ultimate Hang book.

In typical fashion, the shipment from Dutch arrived 2 days after the contest closed. I've been sitting on my box of goodies for two weeks now, waiting for the sewing machine. I also bought 8 yards of Argon Sil to make my first tarp. As the instructions said, PICS OR IT DIDN'T HAPPEN! So I will be using this thread to document my DIY journey. I have never touched a sewing machine before, so I'm going to be starting from zero.

Stay tuned here for updates, and be prepared to offer me unsolicited advice. With sewing, I'm at the part where I don't know the QUESTIONS I need to ask, let alone the ANSWERS. So if you see me doing something stupid, or if you have a better way, please let me know!

I'm very excited to be starting this project. My first stitch ever will happen this weekend.

I have done a small amount of thread injecting, still firmly in the beginer's box. Run a couple of practice pieces through your machine and then go slow and steady.

Congrats! I'm looking forward to following this thread as you get started. I've never actually sewn a hammock, but I've been doing other DIY sewing stuff for a while now, so I'll help anyway I can! There are a lot of people on here that can and will help you out.

Congrats on the win! Good luck on your first DIY. After you finish you're going to have a hard time not spending your life savings on DIY stuff!

Good luck, excited to see the results! Best advice I can give is quality sewing results begin with accurate layout and cutting. Be prepared to spend way more time on this phase that you expect, but it is time well spent that makes the actual sewing go much more smoothly.
