I led a group in the Sipsey Wilderness in Alabama (trip report on the way) this past Saturday. Even with all of the recent cold, sleet, and snow one of the people in the group found a tick on them about mid hike.
Just an FYI....

Yep. Plucked one off me yesterday afternoon.
I found one on the back of my knee the other day. Went camping South of Tuscaloosa the end of February. There are a lot less of them so far this year than I saw last year around this time.
Pulled a deer tick off the dog 2 weeks ago and another this weekend here in NJ. That's not a good sign for what to expect this year.
Will be dosing the dog with Frontline or Pet Armor every 2 weeks as the season kicks off.
Even had a few mosquiotos buzzing around as the temp climbed over 50. Nighttime temps still in the 30's so they'll be dead soon enough but I have a bad feeling about this coming Spring. Permethrin is my friend.
Have sherpas, will travel...

The tick I pulled off of me was brown. Which one is the deer tick and which is the dog tick? I know one has the white spot on its back.
Oh great. I avoid them like the plague, as well as mosquitoes and sweating my butt off...shutting down my backpacking season after it gets that way up north! Usually late-May.
Thanks for the heads up! I was in Sipsey last year for the Easter weekend and we picked several ticks off of us.
So many trails, so little time...

Which one are you?
They make the little aluminum teardrop shaped tick keys to remove ticks now. neat little idea. If I couldn't make one out of an old soda can I might buy one.
I have the teardrop shaped tick key on me at all times now, a few of my fellow hangers have had them already.
Just got back from Gatlinburg, Tenn. and the mosquitoes were out also
