    DIY my first whoopie slings

    Hi all,

Another noob question. I'm working on my first whoopie slings. Making them out of amsteel. I'm toying with the idea of putting some shrink wrap (like for electrical wires) around the bury on the fixed end. My thought being that it would keep the bury tight even when not under tension.

    My guess is that:
    1. I'm (per usual) over thinking this, and fixing a problem that I don't have. That is, the fixed end won't work itself loose even when not under tension.
    2. The heat used to shrink the shrink wrap (just a second under a heat gun, like used for removing paint) might damage the amsteel.

Anyone want to wade into the debate I'm having with myself? :-)

    thanks,

Should work if you're careful, but Amsteel has a low melting point and it'll be easy to damage it and weaken the sling.

Personally, I'd probably just stitch it :-)

If you do a locked bummed and once it's loaded with your weight, it's not going to loosen. If you make it with a simple bury, you can put a few stitches in the bury as many people do to prevent it coming out. I've had shrink wrap come off amsteel before but that was on ends. You may want to load it first and then apply the shrink wrap.

Bubba has it down. A locked brummel and then the bury is an excellent (and recommended) way to make a fixed eye in amsteel. Lock stitching is just as effective as the locked brummel, but takes a bit longer. Keep the heat away from amsteel.

How does one do the lock stitching? I've seen some videos on making whoopie slings, but none showed this. My Amsteel is on its way, and I'm about to give it a try myself.

skater...use the first link in my post above your's for Samson Rope's lock stitching instructions. However, almost everyone uses the locked brummel instead of lock stitching.
