That sure looks pretty out there.
Fishing looked great. I'm a noob fisherman. Could you see the fish in the water and then cast for them? Never fly fished and don't know that I will considering the cost of the equipment and the fact that I'm a bad fisherman.

What were they hitting? Were you matching a hatch or just throwing some old standbys?

I seriously need to head west for some real fishing. Tired of stockies and brookies are my only other option.

These little guys hit everything. My buddy was fishing his design SnakeSkin kebari....a Japanese style Tenkara fly with a Snake Skin body. I tried a few things and they came after all of them...A few Tenkara flies, a Caddis, and a Red Tail...Similar to this:

We could see some of them. Polarized sun glasses makes a huge difference....my buddy left his in the truck so I was spotting for him in a few spots to help him get his fly over the fish I could see. But for a lot of it we just cast and they come up and take it. The stream was fairly packed and we spooked about 95% more than we caught and we caught our fair share. Look into Tenkara...much more affordable than traditional fly fishing and much easier learning curve.

I'm sure you realize it, but for the record, I' going to remind you just how lucky you are. /jealous

Around here I can hit the stockers in the head with a caddis or stone fly and nothing. Throw them some power bait and wham! That's one reason I enjoy fishing brookies in our natural trout streams, they behave like fish, not zoo/farm raised livestock.

You landed some good sized fish here and there. Any legal keepers if you had wanted to? Nothing I like more than cooking some trout stream side for lunch.

There are a lot of places where stockers are taking over the waters. When I was a kid we would fish all day and not get anything but wild trout in a lot of rivers but not so much any more. To get into some wild fish here we have to work for them a bit too but I also would much rather seek them out of the stocked ones.

There are no size limits on trout in this area so we could have kept anything we could have wanted up to 6 each. A few were pushing 10" so 4-6 would have made a worthy snack....they were healthy and you could feel the muscle on them. Not like some places where the fish are skin and bones these fish are doing very well and really thriving in this water. Due to farming down stream these guys are cut off from the lower watershed (and have been for the last 100 or so years) so the fish in this stream are land locked and naturally reproducing outside of any other influences. Makes them fairly unique compared to other strains of rainbows.

Nice report. I really like the shots of the canyon. West with its wide open spaces always looks cool to me.
