Long Ogee Tarp done!

It's done! I set it up with poles and lots stakes for now, as I don't have two trees far apart enough at my parents'.... overall length is a little over 18 feet, ridge line is 11 feet 8 inches, width is 11 feet 4 inches... the set up shows a pronounced "bow" because I set it up first with one triangle staked down before doing the poles... realistically I would set it up ridge line first before staking down the triangle ends.... 16 tie outs, 4 are not utilized in this set up... and it all fits into a 4.5" x 4.5" x 3" pouch of my own making... essentially a shotgun ammo box sized pouch..this is without guy lines and stakes though. For the tie outs, I went a little different...for the ridge line and the triangle center tie outs, I utilized box with X stitches and 3-4 lines of straight stitching onto the hemmed parts, while for all the other tie outs, I utilized 4 straight line stitches onto the hems, kind of like Bushcraft Outfitters' tarps... this saves weight and material a bit.. I haven't weighted it but it is under a pound!

Here is a few more different set ups!

A-Frame with gable ends, two poles (or two trees)

Side view; it's the same as the first pics, BUT with an important difference, I am using the 11 ft 4" ridge line instead of the longer ridge line, and using 4 stakes on the center of the sides, which means the doors are tucked under.

Another view, you can see clearly the doors are tucked underneath...and that there is ample room for one sleeping mat in the space.
Could probably hang a hammock in there and have a little more protection from sideways rain...

And a ground set up;

It involves dropping one end of the A-frame set up, and then staking that corner down, and stake the ends a little differently. Still enough space for one or two people...and gear!
And here's a couple more set ups.... variations of the above set ups..

This time, I'm using the longer ridge line to stake down... and two extra poles to the sides..

AHA. That's why the back looks wider...I staked down two more points on the rear...

I most likely will use the normal Ogee long set up, or the A-frame with Gable end set up....the A-frame with Gable end could probably be turned to a lean-to with a porch by using two poles to support one side when tied to two trees... I don't think I need two more panel pull outs.. Just got to get a non-stretchy line for the ridgeline and prussik loops so I can get the longer ridgeline to be very taut...

Sweet looking tarp. Looks like you will have all bases covered with that tarp. Weather ain't got nothing on you!!!!!

You've certainly explored the versatility that those 16 tieout points afford you, but don't overlook one of the great virtues of the ogee design: when you tie the corners of the "doors" down to the same trees you use for the ridgeline, the only other tieouts needed are for the points of the two side triangles. You can hang this tarp with just two stakes most of the time, if you wish. That makes setup and takedown times shorter. At least, that's the case with the ogee I got from Gargoyle. I'd be interested in hearing how the extra length of yours works with that setup. Good work!

Wv yes I am aware of the simplicity of the ogee basic set up; this is my 2nd ogee tarp I've made. The first one is camo and minimalist sized.. 9ft ridgeline and just over 7 ft width out of 4 yards of fabric... has 10 tie outs.. was considering adding 4 more tie outs but not sure as it really is a tiny tarp. I do have an idea for this longer one... a few sections of old 3/8" tent poles attached to the midpoint tie outs on the sides between the triangle corner and door corner to spread out.. then stake the triangle ends down and tie doors to either tree or other tie outs or both..
Or I can get a tent pole repair kit with pole sections, and 4 mitten hooks or something similar, and tie shock cord to mitten hooks after threading through 2 sections, for a simpler spreader bar set up for the long tarp, which would enable it to be basically an A-frame/ENO Dry Fly shape with doors and side triangles, and still only require 2 stakes but with enough space inside for two hammocks or one hammock and one chair.. The mitten hooks would connect to the tie out loops; and I would use only 2 sections each, instead of bowing into C shapes..it would be straight bars..depending on how strong the poles are though...I could use them to support lightweight gear...hmm.

One is 7' 4" with 3/4" tips on each end. The other two are ~11' long, also with tips. One of these poles has your name on it if you'll do the experimenting with an ogee tarp (either one) and post the results. PM me your choice and a mailing address.

It'll be basically similar to this thing I tried with the 8' duck hunter camo thingamajig. Actually, I might use the same 4 pieces of poles shown in the pictures.... EDIT: As long as the combined length is under 60", it would work. (under 60 because that is the width of the main panel, and we don't need it to be like perfectly FLAT lol)

Did the tent pole mod to this, and I must say...with the trees being a little close together... I was unable to simply tie the doors to the trees, but rather to stake them down to the ground... HOWEVER....with the tent pole mod; I am happy to say that I only used 4 stakes!
Poles are 22" sections, salvaged them from a dome tent that is going to become a 2-pole A-frame bug tent.... (remove old worn out PU coated fabric, get new No-see-um netting and better zipper, then build onto the 5x7 bathtub floorprint.)
I couldn't find two of my narrow webbing pockets, so I used paracord for pole attachments for now.. total width is just around 44", but I think with 48" long poles, it would be a flatter pitch, and cover more of the hammock.... I think if I had raised the hammock or lowered the tarp, it would be more coverage..... we shall see for the first camp trip with this set up! For the attachment of the tarp to the tree; I went a different method.. 1" cargo straps with steel hooks...hooks to attach the tarp to the straps.... I would likely use carabiners or similar for the same thing... and used beckett hitches on all 4 straps to connect to whatever...this made for a quick take down when needed!
