    cell coverage on the SHT

I know, I know, we go to get out of cell phone range, but I have friends coming and going while I attempt a thru hike later this Summer. I mostly just want to use it to meet up with them/text a location. I have Verizon. I'm trying to avoid buying a gps tracker like Spot, since I won't get my money's worth. Any help is appreciated, thanks for all the advice on here. I've learned a lot in the last few months.

It may have changed since I was last up there (a couple years ago) but cell phone reception on the trail was very limited. I was at the north end - it may be better closer to Duluth. But even down on Hwy 61 I was often without service.

Yes it is spotty up there at best. When you get to a high ridge give it a go. You'll get a signal here or there but don't count on it.
I am talking texting more than talking.
North of Grand Marais it gets worse.

Actual voice coverage is hard, but texting seems to work almost always. You can send your text and then continue to walk. after a while, the message will have been uploaded. You do have to watch leaving the phone on all day, since hunting for service really eats up the battery.
If you set up a general time of day to try I think it would be workable.

The good news is Verizon is the only carrier with coverage past Duluth, so what you'll have is as good as it gets.

I'm sorry about your cell coverage.

Oh, wait, is SHT a trail or somethin'?

I'm tickeled pink that there little coverage along the SHT. Imagine how annoying having somebody yacking on a cell phone in camp.

Agreed, Rex. It's only coming on to try and connect with people as I'm sure my plans will go out the window as soon as I step on the trail!
