TIL that it's really hard to splice Zing-It

The rope I ordered came in Tuesday from Redden Marine a day earlier than promised and I've been playing around with it. I got 300ft of 7/64"Amsteel and a roll of Zing It.

First little experiment was an endless loop. Success! However when I was playing with the thing idly while talking to somebody it came apart. Not sure how, washouts spinning in my fingers and blammo it had separated. I made a new one.

Next I cut a 60' length of the 7/64" and did this little reverse splice to lock one end in. Very cool little trick rather than melting.

Next was to make the loop at the other end, again more success. Hooray, this is going better than I thought.

I am using a nail set, a cooking skewer and a piece of hay wire as tools.

Now onto the Zing-It.Well that was a whole other story, I need smaller tools for this I think. I did manage to reverse splice one and and get a nice loop at the there but holy moly was it tight. What sort of tools are others suing for splicing zing-it?

I use floral wire for splicing all my amsteel and zing it. I just fold over a long piece of wire to use. I tried using a loop turner, but it's too big for zing it and just wasn't as quick for me with amsteel so I went back to floral wire.

I don't even use a knitting needle to open it up, I just use the wire as an all in one tool.

Old guitar string. I think it's a B. I also use Dutch's needles. Some things are easier with a needle, others a wire.

Go to any music shop, and ask the guy behind the counter. They all sell strings in single packets. For instance, I have a habit of breaking the top fat strings way more often than any other. So they give the option to buy a few of the string size you personally have a habit of breaking.
Ask for a G string. It's the fattest one that's still a single wire, not wrapped. When you fold them over, the can break if you bend it too sharply, so I'd ask for a couple...

    Splicing zing-it/lash-it sucks!

I don't know why I keep doing it.

Actually, I keep dynaglide on hand to make adjustable ridgelines, soft shackles, loops, etc so I don't have to splice it anymore.

If you have any network cable (Cat-5, Cat-6, etc.), take some apart and use one of the interior wires with the insulation still on. The other suggestions are fine, too. Use whichever one you can find.

I know when I've spliced zing it that tapering the ends by removing strands at intervals made a big difference. Trying to start the splice with the full size cord is really tough. I've recently been using a large needle and some braided fishing line instead of wire to slice with.
