    Tools other than sewing machine?

Howdy folks! Due to a very recent, as of yet unannounced development, my need to get into DIY has become official. Apart from a sewing machine, what other tools should I invest in? Do you have recommendations for particular brands, etc? Here are some of the projects I'm likely to tackle over the next few months/couple years in approximately the order I would tackle them in:

-Modifying a silk sleeping bag liner into a top quilt shape
-Gathered end hammock with knotty mod on one side and cat cut on the other 3
    -Sheltowee-style bug net
-Summer underquilt (probably apex but maaaaybe down if I'm feeling gutsy)
-Large tarp with doors, silnylon or silpoly
    -Down top quilt
    -Cuben tarp with doors

Some of the things I'm thinking I might need include (please feel to add to the list or tell me if something isn't that useful):

    -Rotary fabric cutter
    -Large self healing cutting mat
    -Fabric shears
    -Thread cutters
    -Seam ripper
    -Long, transparent ruler

I'm sure there is a lot I'm forgetting. Please give me any suggestions you have. I appreciate it!

Most of us need a seam ripper sooner or later.

Thanks, I'll update the list in the OP to add things as people make suggestions. Recommend any particular seam ripper?

A long transparent ruler helps with what you have already mentioned.

    Extra Bobbins
    Bobbin winder
    extra needles
    lots of thread
large flat work surface ( I use a 6ft long table with two cutting mats on it

As expensive as cuben is you are almost better off buying the finished product.
I am still 18 but with 52 years of experience !

That's part of why it's the last item on the list. It'll give me time to decide if I really want to make one or not.

Chalk or some kind of fabric marker.
    Perhaps pins?

It is really inconvenient to have a bobbin run out in the middle of a long stitch and then finding out that you don't have any more bobbins wound with that thread. It's a good idea to buy two spools of thread and have a way to wind a bobbin while your sewing machine is set up for the piece that you are working on. A bobbin winder would do. I have an old machine that doesn't sew well, but winds bobbins very quickly.
