INSULATION POCKETS PERMANENTLY ATTACHED TO HAMMOCK

Just wondering has anybody tried sewing a profiled piece of material directly to a hammock, stitched in such a way that it would have pockets down and across the hammock, exactly where you need them for insulation.
This would enable insulation to be slipped in or left out depending on conditions. I thought too I could make separate sleeves filled with down, that could be slipped into the baffle or pocket. I realise the pocket would have to perhaps have to stop the compression in some way. An aspect to this would be that the down sleeves would be of varying length. It could create lots of options though.

Sounds like a Clark hammock. That kind of modular insulation and pockets ends up weighing a lot so I've never considered it.

I experimented with something similar a few years back. It actually works pretty well, and the pockets are great for storage! Something I want to try in the future is a hammock with a double layer (so you can add a pad if you want to), a built in 3/4 UQ , and insulating pockets on the foot end. (kind of the best of both worlds,-an Uq that needs no adjustment, storage pockets, plus if you had a light weight thin pad you have the option to go to ground if needed) So, yes it does work, and if you used a super light weight fabric like argon, it would be pretty light. Be sure to follow the directions in the link mentiond above--Hes got a pretty clever way to do the pleated baffles!

    Thanks guys,

In particular 'hutzelbein' your lead to Lonetrackers project is exactly what I was thinking off. I guessed someone else must have thought of this.
Looks excellent too. I can now plan my own version with some confidence.

    Thanks Stevebo,

Reading your comments has been helpful. I was thinking of making the conversion to a DIY hammock which is made of 1.1 do you think this is too thin?

The material I plan to make the pockets will be 1.1 as well.

Just to be safe, you might want to stick with 1.9 for the hammock body, with 1. 1 for the pockets----the pockets do put a little stress on the fabric. (I never had problems, but 1.9 would give you a safety margin)
