1.1oz 2nds from DIY Gear Supply

Forgive me for being brand new and posting a very generic question, but I'm looking to buy from DIY Gear Supply ASAP and haven't heard back from my inquiry yet.

Here's the question: I want to buy this 1.1 oz 2nd quality ripstop nylon in yellow for a hammock: http://diygearsupply.com/product/1-1...a_color=yellow.

I'm confused because some of the colors say they aren't strong enough for a hammock and the others say "shell/liner fabric for... hammocks" which sounds like maybe it should not be the main component of the hammock?

    I'm 6', 140lb, planning to make a 11' hammock. Sound OK?

    Thanks much!

These all appear risky for a 140 pounder. The first batch would probably love work as a hammock for a 100 pounder. DIY Gear Supply has lots of fabrics to chose from. I would go with a different choice unless it was a double layer. I have built many a hammock, as well as other gear using their materials. Scott will always give you the straight story.

Thanks for your reply! Is it risky because they are seconds? Because I found this chart which seems to indicate that 1.1oz is good for up to 200lb.

I have a WBBB made from 1.0. It is a double layer hammock. But recently I was concerned my son may be too heavy for it and contacted Brandon about this. He said we should be fine in the low 200 range (my son is 215ish). Don't know that this answers your question but hope it helps.

about a year ago most vendors, supply or production, stopped selling single 1.1, if they ever did. They become throw away at most weights. Any minor issue leads quickly to complete default. Our vendors all stand behind there work. So they eliminated the option for error. Thats not to say you cant build or use one that may last a long time. I know if you were looking for seconds , price was probably more the issue then weight, but I would look for the fabrics made for hammocks like the hypderd, polyd, nylond, argon and others from rsbtr, dutch and whoever. If a sl is what you need.

Too bad, I wanted yellow. I should be safe with 1.9oz ripstop then, right?

All ripstop is not created equal. There is a noticeable difference between 1.1's from various sources. That's why I only buy from our vendors whom I trust to tell me the real scoop. This applies to all fabrics. Even tulle isn't created equal.

Fwiw I think you'll be fine. I've used the "lower thread count" coyote for a hammock no problem. I'm 150lbs.

    How about this one: http://ripstopbytheroll.com/collecti...spectra-yellow

The 1.0oz HyperD should be quite a bit stronger than the normal 1.1oz ripstop, and it's lighter, too. It's more expensive, though.

1.9oz should be fine. As should be 1.6oz.

You could always make a double layer out of a weaker fabric like the 1.1oz. That usually works.
