Need Help With a 2 Person One Tree Turtle Dog Set Up

    Howdy all!

Well after a few years of selling, I finally got my wife to agree to her first camping trip in 30 years... No small feat I tell you!

I planned on taking my Turtle Dog stand for me and letting her use a 2P backpacking tent I have. She surprises me and says she wants to try hanging instead! I've got the gear so no problem, right? Wrong.

We are camping at a place that has very few trees. I'm pretty confident that I can find a site that has one suitable tree, not 3 or 4 though. So my question - Can I strap to one tree and use a Turtle Dog tripod for each of us without the pole? Of course I would tie off the tripods, but has anyone ever done this before? If so, got any pics??

Please help me make my wife's rebirth into camping a pleasant one.

    Thanks!

    Tex

I'm pretty sure you will pull the stand onto yourself. However you could use it as a pole and stake it out in two places. I've used a single pole with a line run to the tree and two lines staked to the ground with success.
Stole this photo from Google but should give you an idea.

Thanks Dane. I tried a few configurations in my backyard and that was one of them. It kind of worked but I am not comfortable setting my wife up in that way. My next step is to make a third TD tripod. I've seen some pics where you hang in an "L" shape. You share one tripod. Heading to Lowes...

What if you tried the Yet another Tensegrity Stand using the tree as one of the legs? This will give you 3 hanging spots if the need arises.

Or another option would be to use your tripods and then use the hammock suspension to go over the tripod and be staked to the ground. This will provide some downward force on the tripod and should keep it in place when using the hammock.

    Cheers

FWIW I would consider getting a second ridge pole and using the tree as the common point with two tripods and pole coming off the tree. That lets the head ends be together while the feet are spread apart for room.
    YMMV

I do this often and it works great. One tripod support and one ridge line pole per person; using the tree as the 2nd support for each.
This method is quite a bit more stable when the hammocks are empty as well (aren't in use and light wind).

One tree for the head or foot of both hammocks and one six foot bipod for each of the other two ends, tied off in three opposing sides would be plenty and less weight

Thank you all! It's really nice to have a place to bring questions and have a solid base of experienced people offer their wisdom and experience.

I just got back from Home Depot with all the stuff needed to make a third TD tripod. I also plan on trying Old Pappy's suggestion and use a rigid pole going to a tree for each hammock. My back up plan will be the third tripod. Thanks again!

With three tripods and two ridge poles you should be able to hang two hammocks with no tree.
