Snaps on foot box strong enough?

Just wondering if anyone has had any issues with the snaps on the HG foot boxes. I would like to buy one with the snaps for the versatility of it but I am a bit concerned about the snaps pulling out of the fabric.

I have a 20* Burrow w/snap footbox. I would estimate i have used it 125-150 nights and dozens of afternoon naps.

No issues with the snaps yet. However, I also have 20* with sewn footbox (I double-up in very cold weather). I prefer the sewn footbox.

Snaps inevitably fail or the fabric rips, at least that's my experience. That's why all three of my TQs have sewn footboxes.

I personally don't need or value the "versatility" of snapped.

Here's a thread on the topic.

Snaps failed on my beloved HG Zero Degree Burrow in Argon.

I will send it in for some love from HG, get a sewn footbox with overstuff, just as soon as I'm done using it...which should be in the next couple of weeks.

I'd go with sewn but make sure you know if you are a figure 4 sleeper or not. If you are, may not want it sewn up the side the normal amount, perhaps a bit less. At least that's my plan.

One of my TQ's has a snapped footbox, and though I haven't had any problems with it, I would have preferred it with grosgrain along the seams with the snaps through that. It's my fault for not having noted that when I ordered it, but I just hadn't thought about then.

It just seems that if you aren't very intentional while unsnapping it, it probably wouldn't be hard to tear the thin fabric. I always make sure I grab and pull the snaps while holding the fabric as close to the snaps (finger slightly overlapping the snap, in fact) as possible, and turn them 90° of each other before unsnapping them.

I do like the idea of a convertible footbox, but I prefer the zippered version of it, like on my EE TQ. I like using my quilts in "comforter mode" fairly often. Also, my youngest still likes to sleep in a tent sometimes (thought he wouldn't go back to ground after having hammocked so much, but his little friends don't have hammocks, and he wants to sleep near them sometimes), so I use a pad and my quilt in comforter mode when in a tent with him/them/us. If I didn't share it with my son, I'd just close the footbox.

I can totally see why anything other than a sewn footbox would be useless if you only used the quilts in your hammock. In that situation, I'd also go with a sewn footbox. A little gap here and there becomes less and less tolerable the further south you get from 20°F.

I made one with snaps and don't like them at all. They leave gaps between the snaps, they don't hold (at least one is open by morning) and it takes the utmost care to not rip the fabric.

If I would order a top quilt again, I would ask for a zippered footbox with 2 sliders. I like closing the side but have the end open since I like to vent.

I am going against the stream on this one. I have a 20* burrow with snaps and I really like them. I have at least 100 nights in it. All ranging from 18* to 65* and I have liked the flexibility of unsnapping and using just as a blanket cover. During the colder temp mentioned I wear a little heavier of a sock. Either way I have enjoy the flexibility. Any colder then the temp mentioned above I have gone with a sewn footbox.

I received a new HG 50° Burrow a few weeks ago with snaps. The snaps make a strong connection and I've never had a problem with HG snaps coming undone on their own.

There is also reinforcing (grosgrain?) sewn into the quilt edges in the area of the snaps. It appears to be substantial, but I always take care in how I unsnap a TQ footbox.

Never a problem with my snaps. Treat them kindly.
