WOW!! Thanks to all those who attended the first spring hang at Goose Island state park. Even though there were some initial hiccups with getting sites sorted , It all worked out. I believe the final head count was 28, not too bad for a new venue so far out of the way. I am glad I got to show off my home town park. There was a lot of talk about kayaking before the trip but the weather wound up being sketchy at best. The first day my self and one other young man headed out only to be greeted at our destination by a front line bringing 20mph sustained with 28mph gusts. These winds bucking the incoming tide made for some "interesting" conditions but he handled it like a champ even being only his second time in a kayak. The smaller group size gave everyone a chance to converse and get to know one another better. Lots of new friendships were made and old ones strengthened. There were lots of good hanging trees in the sites and the few neighbors not a part of the hang seemed intrigued by our "cocoons". Once again I am in awe at the kids in our "family", as even the smallest ones were overheard saying, "Don't put that in your mouth. It will make you stupid sick." Being around people that want to get their families unplugged and outdoors makes me happy beyond words. The Saturday pot luck brought out the known awesome cooking skills of our members. Some of my favorites were the drunken dates, the sopapilla cheese cake, and the "secret recipe" mac and cheese. So to some of those that were unable to make this trip, know you were missed, and to those that did make it, thanks once again.
P.S. We did also determine that zombies eat our of a desire to consume and not for sustenance.
