The bad thing is most people that hang hammocks for just a relaxing day picnic don't use good tree straps. I see plenty of para-cord and other rope being used around trees. I hope this can get corrected and hammocks don't get banned. That is some beautiful oaks.
I thought they had biologists and arborists give the thumbs up to hammocks there.

Sounds like these kids are hanging from the limbs of the trees, not the trunks. It doesn't sound good for the trees, especially with multiple people hanging from the same limb. I'll bet these boneheads also don't have proper straps and are probably hanging pretty high, disregarding the "hang as high as you want to fall" rule.

Sounds like these are big oaks. I don't think I carry straps big enough for these trees. If too many people impact a small area damage will be a result. The article seemed a bit extreme but without being able to see what is really going on to the trees I can just hope they make the best choice for those trees.

Properly affixed was using straps on the trunk, not the limbs. Those who enjoy attaching hammocks to the trees on the Mandeville lakefront will apparently be allowed to hang around. After concerns were raised recently about the popular tree hammocks, Mayor Donald Villere said he consulted with two arborists who said the practice would not hurt the giant lakefront oaks so long as the devices were properly affixed to the trees.
The arborists inspected the trees after citizens questioned whether the hammocks could damage the iconic oaks that line Lake Pontchartrain. Councilman Ernest Burguieres also said he would consider offering legislation to ban the hammocks if it was determined they were causing damage to the trees.

Other than possible damage to the trees, it proabably just looks white trash to have a bunch of different bright color hammocks blowing in the wind.
Sorry I know that's blasphemy here But quite certain it was a driving force for many complaining down there.
Sort of like neighborhood associations that ban sheds. They're awesome for storing stuff and keeping your garage clean; no arguement. But for some reason every hillbilly seems to pile wood, a broken wheel burrow, rusty ladder and bright blue plastic tarp on the BACK of it for you to look at.
