switching from double layer to single layer....

For many reasons, I'm switching from double layer to single layer hammock. The only concern that I have, is biting and stinging insects. I've used permetherin on other clothes and gear and never had a problem. So, I'm looking for some real world feedback. Will treating a single layer with permetherin keep those pesky insects from eating me up? You guys who already do this, please chime in. Theorists and Osha folks, move along.

I don't know about permetherin but a bug net that fully encloses you will. So will an underquilt.

    Yep....

I know a quilt or mosquito sock will. The single layer that I've ordered has dual zippers with a zippable net. I'm not planning on using a quilt in the warm months....so...

Still like to hear from single layer guys...

Integrated bugnet or independent bugnet? I use independent bugnets and do not spray my hammock (though I do spray my bugnet) with permethrin.

I don't know what "osha folks" are, but "real world" feedback is usually just people sharing their fears with you.

The mosquito net zips in and covers the top of the hammock. It's a Dream Hammock Darien...

Then spray away. I got eaten from beneath once and didn't enjoy it. You could hope that your UQ will shield you, but I'd just use the permethrin and have peace of mind.

I like your thought on the net separate....saves a little weight and no worries about the bottom...what kind of seperate net do you use?

I use the BIAS NanoBuginator, and I also have a couple of Buginators. I've seen Dutch's Fronkey bugnet, and it's a bit cheaper. However, the BIAS bugnets have a cinch closure on the ridgeline openings that make me feel a bit more secure (in theory). In practice, I doubt there's much difference between the two bugnets.

I have a Fronkey style and I like it. During the colder months I leave the bottom drawcord open and it still keeps everything out. In the summer when the bugs are really bad I close up the bottom as tight as it'll go, and then I stuff a bandana into the little space left from the cinching.
