    Community Tarp

Every now and then I see a new post where some DIY newbie makes his first something or other, usually something that has been made by a thousand other people already, then gushes on and on about how he learned to do one thing from one member, another thing from another member, yadda, yadda, yadda.

Well, this is one of those posts.

Besides my top quilt, which is from Underground Quilts and I love to death, everything is now me-made. The tarp was the last thing to get checked off. My work is not neat. It looks like I'm sleeping in a pile of remnants sewn together by children, but it's all functional.

    So the thank you's -

First, of course, is Fronkey. He helped me turn this...

    Into this...

    Free Range Tarp.jpg

Then there's Dutch, who sold me a bunch of ingenious, and totally unnecessary (who admits that in their own sales pitch!?) gizmos. Because hey, this is MY tarp. I wanted some bells and whistles!

    Dutch Wasp.jpg

    Dutch D-rings.jpg

Next, a dozen guys on the internet who all had a different way of reinforcing corners, making homemade seem sealer....

    Send In The Reinforcements.jpg

    ...and making string pockets.

    Not Fronkey's Pockets.jpg

Finally, I have to thank the omnipresent Shug for teaching me how to tie some knots...

    Some Call It A Prue-Seek Knot.jpg

...work a continuous ridge line, and make coffee in a hammock.

I tried it out last night at a little Boy Scout over-nighter.

    Works great.

Though it's been said many times, many ways, thanks for passing on so much wisdom. Well, experience, anyway.

Cool set up. I'm just getting into it. I'll be picking up my material for my tarp next week. Just finished whipping my dutchgear hammock with some 550 cord and some home made whoopie slings. All of it totally "functional!

Fellow yooper! Looks great. I'm hoping to have a complete homemade setup soon as well. I only have my top quilt to go for my sleep system.

I'm trying to remember now. Looking at it I would say it is either two half-hitches, or a taut-line hitch. My guess is it is simply a taut-line hitch which has been pulled all the way in so there is no loop.

Great! Maybe we will see each other at a regional group hang.

Yeah, my taut line hitch never looks that clean and wrapped. I thought maybe it was a variation of the hangman's.

Thanks Fronkey. Couldn't have done it without you!
