cheap local source of synthetic insulation?

Hey guys, I am making a synthetic underquilt, using some walmart cloth and some left over insulation from another project. I am just a little short on insulation, and hate to order some , because I need it soon, and am on a really tight budget. Is there anything locally available that would work? (walmart, fabric stores etc?) Any suggestions? Thanks!

Walmart carries some "high loft" polyester for quilting. It's about 1/2" thick. Obviously it's not the quality of the Climashield or Polarguard, but it might do what you need. Pretty cheap too.

Jo-ann Fabric has something similar too.

Jo-Anne has often had that stuff on sale for half price several times I've gone there.

...old sleeping bags and comforters should work.

There should be enough left over to piece together a top quilt, too.

Iafte made some underquilts using that quilt batting, and I think that that he said they were comfortable below freezing. On the other hand, I don't think that you are going to be able to secure that stuff the same way that you do with Climashield. As an alternative, have you thought about maybe shortening the UQ? I don't know what the original length was supposed to be, or how short you are on insulation, but 2/3 and 1/2 UQ's seem to be all the rage.

I may go that route, a 3/4 length UQ. Thanks for the idea! I also carry a blue walmart ccf pad (doubles as the suspension for my pack) Any ideas how to use the pad to keep my feet warm, (without folding it up like a z pad, or without putting it in the inside of hammock?) I want to carry a pad incase I have to go to ground, but am having trouble figuring out a way to use it with the UQ.

I keep thinking about this, but the stuff I have available locally doesn't seem to compress much at all.

    - and from OWF I can get enough to make one with the good synthetic stuff for about $30 plus shipping.

I just got back from my local Goodwill and they had a bunch of sleeping bags for $2.99. I picked up the Down bag and left all the synthetic stuff. But they had a bunch of good +40° bags that could be used for materials.
