VIDEO: Medicine Man & Ninja Hit The Highlands

This last weekend my sidekick Ninja and I took a little jaunt on the Appalachian Trail in the Roan Highlands. This was one of my favorite sections from when I thru-hiked.

The weather was perfect for gear testing (rain, wind, cold).

We headed out from ATL Friday mourning and made it to Mountain Harbour B&B in Roan Mtn, TN at 3:30. We took the $55 shuttle to Iron Mtn Gap and hiked 4 miles to Greasy Creek Gap. We didn't see a soul on the trail until we got to camp and had a thru-hiking neighbor.

Saturday we woke up to rain and hiked 18miles up and over Roan Mtn to Overmountain Shelter. Saw 6 or so hikers on the trail and probably 20-30 bedded down when we arrived at Overmountain. We were the only hammockers besides the one ENO that was setup under the shelter.

We finished off Sunday with a 8 mile hike in the clouds over the balds.

Our newly made synthetic TQ's and UQ's performed better than expected. I was thinking they'd only be good to 40, but they took us into the 30's and we both still had to remove some clothing layers. I believe it being a humid cold helped us out. We had very little condensation due to the heavy consistent wind.
Our newly made hammocks performed equally as well. The overcovers are a nice touch.

All and all a wonderfully successful weekend, and another epic trip in the books.

Thanks for the trip. Several of us are planning the same hike the last weekend in May. They've hiked this trail, I haven't yet. Thanks for giving me a glimpse of the terrain and what's waiting. The balds look to be terrific.

Glad you enjoyed and found it insightful. This really is a great section. I don't think this will be my last visit.

Great video. I'll have to put Roan on the list of sections I need to do!

Thanks fellers! Makes me giddy that I could take you back to Roan Shugro. Perhaps you and Hickery could take a jaunt through there and show us how the lords of lolligag do it. Not a bad hiking cap for a Wally World $7 special, and out of the women's section to boot eh? Hammock comma at it's finest. I always get my best sleep hang'n in the woods.
