Normally, I would not have that magazine (or any other magazine these days) but I got it as a gift. I haven't found too much to get excited about, but I have found some destinations to add to my bucket list.

And this is one of the many reasons Backpacker magazine lost my subscription years ago. Luckily I have shelves upon shelves of them spanning from the 80's till a few years ago. They only talk about the most expensive stuff not the most effective or best stuff. Not surprised at all really, the magazine isn't even worth thumbing through at the news rack anymore.

I like it for the section on new gear coming out (even if it is limited to the big companies) and the trip ideas. Key word there is 'idea' as their trip articles are usually written as if the author heard about the trip from someone who heard about it from someone else.
I usually wait for a $3 subscription or so and then let it lapse till I see another deal. The main articles are usually the same dozen or two subjects in rotation.
"survival skills to save your live!"
"plan your dream Grand Canyon getaway with our guide!"
"best gear of this year!"
you get the idea.
They still print magazines? On paper? Really!? Weird! What with just about every human on Earth having the equivalent of the Library of Congress in their shirt pocket for random access to any kind of information anybody can think of I would have thought paper publications like magazines would be extinct by now.
My tongue is planted firmly in my cheek right now, mind you. It is amazing how far we have come in such a short time.
What with all the information going digital these days I fear that if the power ever decides to go out permanently we will all be back to caveman stupid in a generation or two lol.

A good alternative is Trail Groove magazine. It is free and has some pretty good articles and information. Some of the contributors are very experienced hikers.

I'd rather go online and find a video of someone nit-picking every single detail about a product in a 10 minute video opposed to a 2"x2" photo and a few senrtences of copy.
