    Mil. Surplus vs. Walmart

Military ccf pad vs. Walmart blue ccf pad. I remember reading that there was a major difference in insulation properties, but I can't find the thread. Can someone with experience with these two please enlighten me?

Love your new avatar, Mule - now we need to link you up with MacEntyre and his travois / hammock idea!

Edit: not nice of me to hijack the thread without answering Pedro first.

    Is this the thread?

Thanks, Frawg. There was a bit of info there, and a lot of art commentary! There seems to be some disagreement on whether the military pad is any warmer than the walmart pad. I would be interested to know how low Neo can go with a blue pad, as a comparison. That guy has got ice in his veins!

I can't say which is warmer, but the w/m pad is thicker, and somewhat stiffer.

My GI pad has been cut down to fit in a BA bag, or I'd weigh them both.

Yeah, they didn't take long to get sidetracked. And you gotta be right about Neo. There's no way I could take a pad that low. This coming winter will be my time to figure this stuff out, though.

BTW, here's a Google search that should lead you to most of the discussions here on the topic. Too much to start quoting in this thread, but the first page of results should get you close to an answer.

    Cheers!

    Pedro,

I have used both and still have srcaps of each around...

The Mil Pad is green...Olive actually ...

I Have amil pad that is 3/8 in thick.

and, I have a mil pad that is 1/2 inch thick.

Therefore it id important to figure which pad or at least which lot# one is attempting to compare....This is a good point to rememberas millions of these have been made under numberous contracts.... Sand/tan is the current popular color I bet.

Both the mil pads are less flexible.

they both seem to have some internal porosity ( no absorbsion mind you) thus they get some decent compression, yet still remain thick and insulate.

The 3/8 pad is 23.5 inches wide... a nice plus

A true, made to spec mil pd will have two 20 inch ribbons of 3/4 GGR sewn to a small pad that is glued to the pad so that when rolled up they can be tied to hold it in a roll.

The mil pads are stiffer than the WW Blue Pad also.

Both of these make me sweat to much for comfort in a hammock and are too thin for comfort on the ground at my age...BTW this is true for the WW Blue Pad also.

    Hope this helps.

    Pan,

Have you found a difference in the thermal characteristics of the 1/2" milspec pad versus the 1/2" blue walmart pad? What about visually? Do the cells look smaller?

The reason why I'm asking about this is that I use a DIY gearskin pack, which requires a foam pad for the frame. I currently use a walmart pad, and I have an evasote pad, but the evasote isn't stiff enough to make a good frame. It is also so clingy that it makes it difficult to position it into the correct shape. It's a shame, really, because the evasote is much more comfortable than the blue foam, has superior thermal properties, and is lighter to boot.
But I was wondering if the milspec pad was warmer than the walmart pad so that I could have my cake and eat it too.

    Pedro

P.S.: Never mind. I think that I can make the evasote pad work. I just have to work on my foam origami-do.

Interesting...so, just because a pad is the right color, and comes from an Army surplus store, it's not mil-spec?

Pedro, can you not laminate some evasote to the blue pad?
