    Snakeskins for hammock?

Apologies if this has been discussed to death; I searched but found nothing.

I just got snakeskins for my Superfly and love them. That got me thinking-why not do the same with my XLC hammock?

Any strong opinions either way, or suggestions?

Thanks in advance-there's always a lot of wisdom here!

That's an idea, but I was thinking more along the lines of regular skins, just for the hammock without all the other stuff. It seems like nibs would pack up better that way, and I like to be able to air out the quilts during the day if the weather's good.

Love snake skins for deploying and managing the tarp in high wind, but can't see the benefit for a hammock. It's just extra weight to me.

IMO, the main benefit provided by hammock skins is allowing you a way to pack up your quilts with your hammock so breakdown and setup time is much faster. I'm pretty new to using underquilts, so just because I set it up right one night doesn't mean I will the next night. Until I get better at that, anything that lets me keep my UQ attached to my hammock with the UQ suspension perfectly dialed in is a big win. A large bishop bag or double-sided stuff sack accomplishes the same thing (quilts + hammock), they can be compressed easier, and either of those goes in your pack in a more straightforward and predictable manner than skins.

A case can be made that hanging the hammock and leaving it in the skins temporarily gives you more space under your tarp for cooking or socializing in bad weather, and they might make it a little easier to keep your hammock out of the dirt, but doesn't seem worth it to me just for that. Leaving the hammock in your pack until you are ready for it doesn't seem like that big a hardship, and with just a little care it won't pop out of your bishop bag or stuff sack into the dirt when you are hanging it.

I've been thinking a lot about using skins with my hammock over the last couple weeks, and I settled on the idea that a big bag should work better for me.

I use snakeskins for my tarp and SLUG for hammock/quilts/pillow. Such quick put-up and take - down - I love it!

I have a question on topic, is it possible to take your tarp and put it in your hammock and then slide the snakeskins over it or would that be to thick how effective would it be

I rolled my diamond tarp, hammock, and under cover up in one set of snake skins for a while. You have to be careful in how you do it, but it's possible.

Now, I'm packing my tarp separately in skins and packing the hammock and uc in a double opening stuff sack with suspension attached.

Don't mix your hammock & tarp in the same skins as the tarp will get the hammock wet at some point. Since you ask, I don't like the snake skins. Had a couple sets & gave to the Grandboys. I use double ended bags for each & never pack together. I pack my tarp on the outside of the pack to keep moisture from everything else. It usually has dew on it.
