    DIY Asym SilPoly tarp!

So this is my first real DIY piece of gear besides a little stuff sack for my cook kit. I had a blast building it and even more testing it out. I roughly used the guidelines for an Asym tarp from diygearsupply.com with some personal modifications.

I started out with 4 yards of 1.1 oz SilPoly from ripstopbytheroll.

Then I measured and cut it to the size I needed.

I then embarked on the painstaking task of hemming the entire thing. I wish I had found those threads on the hemming tool things before did this, but live and learn!

Then came the corners and tie out points. I realize this could be somewhat overkill but I think it turned out looking pretty nice.

    DIY Asym SilPoly tarp!

    With the grosgrain edging

added the silkworms from Dutch. Awesome by the way, they are really simple to use and work great! I used a piece of 7/8 grosgrain folded in half to sew the silkworms on because it was the perfect size for the slot.

The ridge line tie outs got a similar treatment but with polyester webbing. All the corner reinforcement is 1.6 oz ripstop by the way.

Here's some testing in the house

I made a little double ended stuff sack and I'm super pleased with how small it packs down and how light it is.

it weighs just over 8 oz and that is including all suspension lines, guy out lines, stuff sack, stakes(titanium nail stakes from Dutch) and all hardware like silkworms a flea and a Dutch hook.

I finally got to try it out for real and it worked great. I slept under it in the rain and no problems at all. warm and dry!

Great looking thread work! I wish I could make time to do some DIY projects.

Yeah I decided to go with the asym because it uses like half of the material so it's quite a bit cheaper, lighter and smaller and because I live in Utah and it doesn't rain that much it was the perfect option for me.

This is really, really nice! Thanks for sharing all the details and taking those nice pics. You've got a nice eye.

Question. Would you mind if I posted this on the site and sent you a 10% off coupon for your next build??? Thanks again for posting.

Now you got me itching to order some silpoly from Kyle. I've been thinking about doing a small asym for my backpacking setup.
