Usually feed through the loop. Although I did just order some clips to try out, it'll be nice to have a bit of weight to help throw the strap around larger trees.

Dutch Clips for me.
Incidentally.......:
Thomas Jefferson,
Jonas Salk,
Albert Einstein,
Abraham Lincoln,
Sir Isaac Newton,
Benjamin Franklin.
All pretty darn smart people.
All have 2 things in common-
1. They didn't use Dutch Clips
2. They're all dead.
That should be enough to sway your decision.
:-)
I've gone to find myself. If I get back before I return, make sure I stay here.
When I see lovers' names carved into a tree, I don't think it's cute. I think it's strange how so many people take knives on a date.

Here is where the Dutch Clip earns it's 18.25 grams.....
The tree has low branches within the area that is about the right height to attach your strap. So you proceed to guesstimate how high that point is, and wrap your strap around d the tree between two branches. You go on to complete the hanging of the hammock. Then you realize that you can't get a 30° angle without the hammock being too high or too low, meaning the attachment point to the tree needs to be either lowered or raised.
Now, if you have a Dutch Clip you simply unhook it, move past the next branch and re-hook it. If you threaded the tail through the loop, you have to disconnect the suspension from the hammock (whereupon it falls into the mud), un-thread the strap (oh wait, the marlin spike hitch needs to come out first), then move past the next branch and re-thread the strap, reconnect the muddy hammock, look for the marlin spike stick that you dropped....
Well, that's why I carry the 18.25 gram Dutch Clip.
Been there, done that!

I'm a looper, as I could never see the advantage of the clip. I may have to get some though, as apparently they make you a comedic genius!
Well, this may have been user error, but this is why I now use carabiners instead of the clips.

It's technique. I unhook the whoopie from the Marlin Spike and stick my arm through the whoopie loop. Problem solved.....no dropping in the mud. I then adjust and hang. At any given time we have 4 hammocks up when hiking with friends. That is 76.68(w/tax) in Dutch clips. I would rather have two more Dutch hammocks for the money spent on clips. Comme ci comme ça.
