    winter topcover question

Folks, I'm waiting for Brandon to get caught up so I can order a WBBBXLC, and would like to know if I really need that topcover? I don't plan on doing any Winter hangs since I'm skiing almost every day if there's enough snow. I'll order an Edge tarp, and will use a sleeping bag as a top quilt. If it gets really cold, I have a Sierra Designs Cumulus bag I took to Denali for a climb-good to negative 40! So, do I save the $$ or splurge?

I say save the cash man, that's what i did. It might be nice on that "one bad night once or twice a year", but in the long run i just don't think it's worth it in my opinion. There's plenty of other things to spend extra $75 bucks you would save on lol.

You don't need a top cover if you are not doing any winter hanging. You will though need an underquilt if you don't have one. The sleeping bag will only keep you warm on top since the material is compressed under you. Most people need a pad or underquilt at any temperature below 70 degrees.

I was out Friday, at night the low was around 40*.
I have a Yeti UQ and used a sleeping bag for a TQ
I was awakened by cold several times.
Once after getting up and back into the hammock the underquilt slid to the other side.
Didn't take long to figure that out.
My legs got cold (had thick wool socks on) when they came out of the sleeping bag.
The area where the UQ ended was noticibly cooler. Going to try CCF in that area next time.
    Good luck

You will need a small bit of pad under your feet. I like a Thermarest Sit-Pad inside of my TQ or sleeping bag. Never get condensation that way either.
    Carry forth......

Thanks, guys! I'll skip the topcover, but I also have a ton of pads-everything from a blue closed-cell pad to a ThermaRest NeoAir ultralite. All are full-sized.

Shug, watched your 4-day backpack in Wisconsin last night; nice trip, but you guys need to come out here-real mountains!017.jpg

Hope posting this photo this works!!

Hi Alex Welcome to the forum.
For me there are lots of reasons to own a top cover for your hammock but it is one of those nice to have things not a must have.
If you have the budget for it I would get one since with the wbbb XLC you can't order one after the fact.
The number one reason I like a top cover is for wind. I find using a top cover and underquilt protector I can use lighter quilts. Saving me money, bulk in my pack and weight.
The second reason is it helps keep all my stuff inside the hammock. In Colorado I hardly ever use a bug net which will do the same thing.

I ordered the top-cover with my XLC and I have yet to use/need it. I have kind of regretted buying it as I just don't think it will get used. Maybe 1 or 2 times a yr as I don't do THAT much sub 20° camping. I have considered selling it. I still might.

During my backyard winter testing I have found that while it fits like a glove, looks great and does make a difference in wind/cold, i really miss the view of the hammock/net combo. YMMV.

Though not a XLC, I use my topcover on my Dangerbird almost 50% of the time. If temps are below 45, I'm using it.
