DIY Climashield 2.5 3/4 UQ (PIC HEAVY)

With everything I've learned from these forums over the years, I've been meaning to give back what I could in order to help others. I've got quite a few projects that I'll be trying to post, here is my most recent....

Forgive the photo quality and full size pics. All I had handy was my phone's camera and haven't figured out the image linking process the greatest yet for the forums..Still very much a novice outside of text posts.

With an on order Dream Hammock, I needed to make sure I had coordinating accessories ready to go as soon as it arrives at my doorstep. Since it'll be camouflage heavy, I needed a matching underquilt. Wanted to use synthetic for a warmer weather quilt as I have a few down UQs already.

2 yards 2.5 oz Climashield APEX
2 yards 1.1 oz calendered MultiCam ripstop
2 yards 1.1 oz Olive Drab ripstop
5 yards MultiCam 1" grosgrain (which wasn't quite enough to finish)
Courtesy of Ripstop By The Roll

Plenty of 1/8' shockcord. Closet to a camo I could quickly find.

I've done a few synthetic quilts and honestly on mine there isn't anything that one hasn't seen before on the forums, so I didn't reference any particular build thread and just threw this together more based on experience.

I did use the 3 1/2 sides sewn and flipped inside out approach. Even though I was binding everything with grosgrain, I wanted to prepare for any change of plans so I made sure the seams were hidden just in case. I don't have a scale to get a weight, but it is very light. Sized at 60"x50"

    Love getting my RSBTR packages...

Love the width of the Multicam

    Cutting both trimmed sides down

Tried something from my norm in the process. Typically I would use scrap nylon on top of the climashield fabric stack in order to prevent snagging. This time I cut the fabric an extra inch or so to rollover top of the climashield. As easy as this was, think this will be my go to method in the future.

    Ready to be sewn together

After sewing and flipped inside out

Grosgrain pinning. Remembered that I hate working with 1" grosgrain on this project. I'll have to make a point to use 1.5 in the future, but the 1" sure looks nice. Lots of pinning (yes I took to the extreme)

Everything pretty well complete and shockcord attached

    Finished Quilt

Ran out of the MultiCam grosgrain so had to use some larger Realtree camo that I had from a prior build. Look closely at the nearest end. Figure my excuse will be so that I could determine and head and foot end easier

That's a nice quilt. Thanks for the pictures and descriptions! How much does it weigh? What are the advantages of using grosgrain instead of making a channel with the ripstop?

    All the best!

Thank you! I'm not positive on an exact weight. Still haven'tgotten around to purchasing a scale.

I've never used nylon channels and mostly I think it could be a personal preference. For me, I learned grosgrain and this was just the "way you do it".
I think nylon would ultimately be easier to incorporate, but I have heard nylon channel users sometimes mention that channels made like that don't hold the shockcord as well and don't conform as well to the hammock. The grosgrain grips better and prevents the quilt from moving or sliding out of the desired position.
As I said, I haven't personally used used or built amy with nylon channels so YMMV.

Personally I find that the grosgrain interfere's with cinching. It just doesn't bunch cleanly, because it's so stiff, and I couldn't get a snug clean fit. I've built two. The first with grosgrain end channels and the second with nylon. I'll always do nylon from now on.

To each their own though. Build your own build and such.

I received a lot of weight questions in another thread, so finally gave in and picked up a scale. Thought I'd update here as well.

Comes in just under 16oz. That's with the current abundance of shock cord attached, as you can see in the prior pics. Cut it overly long until I can test fit to get a better idea on the length to cut it.

Did you use a single layer of insulation or more than one? Also, with the 2.5oz, what's your expected temperature range?
    Thanks!

It was a single layer of insulation. The general consensus seems to be between 40-50f for the single layer of 2.5oz climashield, depending on being a warm/cold sleeper. Since this is more of a 3/4 size design, I hadn't intended on taking it below 50.

Nice job! I like the idea of folding over the insulation too
