    North Georgia base-camp location

While my wife enjoys camping, she isn't into back packing.

I am looking for something like Vogel State Park and its Coosa Backcountry Trail.

What other base-camps can anyone point me to in North Georgia where she can kick back, relax, and escape cell phone range for a 3 day weekend while the kiddos and I can do a loop or out and back?

    Thanks,
    STinGa

Burrells Ford on the Chattooga! There's a campground that she can hang out at and you and the kids have access to the Foothills Trail, the Chattooga River Trail, King Creek Falls, Spoonauger Falls, Ellicott Rock, Walhalla Fish Hatchery and some pretty good trout fishing. The falls are fairly close to the campground so your wife might enjoy a trip to them. You can create about a 10 or so mile loop with the Chattooga River Trail, the Foothills Trail and the East Fork trail. There's a bit of road walking but it brings you through the hatchery which is kinda cool to see. I'm sure you could find other loops as well depending on how much you want to hike. There are a couple of other trails that spur off of the Chattooga Trail up past Ellicott Rock that go on into NC.

While not nearly as nice as Vogel SP, have you considered Lake Winfield Scott or Dockery Lake campgrounds? They are both no-frills campgrounds that have limited facilities and offer many hiking opportunities.

Fort mountain state park is very nice, and they have a back country loop with back country campsites. (plus its a bit cooler up there in the summer---very nice beach, nice campground etc!)
FYI: If you want to know what type a certain bear is, sneak up behind it and kick it. Then,
run like crazy and climb up a tree. If the bear climbs the tree and eats you, it's a black
bear. If the bear just pushes the tree over and eats you, it's a grizzly bear : )

Do not walk behind me, for I may not lead. Do not walk ahead of me, for I may not follow. Do not walk beside me, either, just leave me alone.

Another option if she wants to base camp at Vogel is to have her drive you to one of the AT crossings nearby and hike back. Vogel is just down the road from Neel gap. You could arrange for her to pick you up again at the Walasi-Yi center, or hike back via a side trail that connects back to Coosa / Bear Hair.

All very good suggestions. Lake Winfield Scott is probably the best for having NO cell coverage. While its not GA, Standing Indian Campground isn't too far north and offers several day hike loops as the AT makes sort of a horse shoe turn around that area.

Thanks for the suggestions everyone. Lake Winfield Scott and Dockery Lake look really promising. Some of the others look pretty good also.

I hope everyone is enjoying their Memorial Day weekend.

Better get there early for Dockery Lake, there's only 12 sites and they fill up quick.

Oconee SP at the end of the Foothills Trail in SC has a nice campground. Stayed there a few times. Black Rock Mtn SP north of Clayton is a possibility. The campground is a nice and being a few hundred feet above the valley floor is usually cooler. There are some good trails in the park and plenty of places to walk nearby.
