I figure 8 the excess ridge line but the rest of my lines just stay in play. I use the Lawson glow line and it doesn't tangle on me. At least not enough to give me any issue when the moments matter.

Sorry you got drenched but that was a great story. Made me laugh as myself for some of the stuff I've pulled.

See, normally I would have always thrown in a small kit I carry with me. Always. But this time, when I needed it, I didn't So no lighter to burn them, no time swiss army knife, no nothing. And yes, it clearly taught me that I have to store guy lines properly!
Somebody told me how frightening it was how much topsoil we are losing each year, but I told that story around the campfire and nobody got scared.

Every now and then I get lazy and do not properly store the lines. Then I always remember why I should

Once after a wet trip I hung my tarp at home to dry out on a windy day, without staking out the lines (mason line). You don't want to do this- it took me an hour to get them all untangled.

That's what I'm using--mason line. I couldn't believe how tangled it was. it was a gordian knot! And I didn't even have a knife to cut it with! I laughed out loud!

Weight Weenies - hid your eyes. I found some plastic kite winders - really just a thin piece of rigid plastic with a notch at each end. Hardly weighs a thing and I just wind my lines up on it. I bought about 15 and use them for all kinds of things - I have several tarps - like I go back and forth about having separate guy lines for each tarp and hammock (if it has pull-outs), or just keep all guy lines separate from the tarp. I don't recall the web source or price (cheap) but I'm sure Google could find some.

Experience is a harsh teacher. I'd have to disagree with Brian about the knife being rule #9 though; I'd put it at rule #1, and not some cheap "folding" knife either-get a good one, and it should be sharp enough to shave with-literally.

Rule 9 is in reference to the main character on the TV show NCIS. I agree that a cutting tool of some sort is rule 1 when packing your kit for any trip to the woods.

I figure 8 the main suspension line but for the guylines I like to use an overhand knot. I picked this idea up somewhere on the forums. Perhaps this thread. I just end up folding the guyline in half a few times then tie a quick overhand knot and pull everything into the tarp skins.
