That's my only concern. I drink a lot of water and I'm sure the more folks we have the more water we'll need.

The Wise has a tiny* spring, but about the same distance from the shelter is a "river" **. I remember the spring at Old Orchard being rather large & free flowing***, but it had rained for about 5 of the 8 days it took me to get there, so,,,,,,,,,,,
I have drank straight from all 3 with no ill effect, but then I am a poor test subject having drunk from springs / streams that made others who filtered / treated, quite SICK. YMMV!

    * by my eye: about 5" deep, & about 1' x 1.5' with "Some" flow, on the same day I was at Old Orchard.
** I think it would take a serious drought to dry up the river!
*** again "By eye" about 8" deep & about 3' x 4' with a "Pretty good" flow, on the same day I was at Wise.

Some folks are adamant about wanting Wise. Others want something new. Most of us would prefer to rely on someone with local knowledge to make the decision since it's not even fair to choose between unknowns. So...How about some one who has knowledge of both the Wise shelter and the Old Orchard shelter just make the decision. Or, maybe someone with local knowledge has already spoken. How about it, Jack?

Good point, DTE. I'm fine either way. Just looking forward to getting there!

Just a few thoughts remaining for me.
I've only been by Old Orchard about 3 times. One of those times we checked the spring & it was dry, but that may have been during drier times.
But I guess it does concern me a little about the possibility of a less than ideal water source, especially w/ a group that size.
If it gets dry enough that the big creek at Wise dries up, I think we we'll all know about it in advance. No problem w/ water there.

In all honesty, I feel a little concern about the parking at Old Orchard too, but it may be unfounded. I'd sure like to know that there would be no supprizes about the "extra" parking just down the road were the horse trailers park.
I'd also like to know a little more about the trail that shows on the map, leading from the "extra" parking to the AT junction w/ the road.
If there were to be much snow & the roads had been plowed, it sure wouldn't be safe to walk the road. Some of the local good ol boys may come barreling down through there & take out a hammocker or two
    I voted for Wise.
I too will something make and joy in it's making

In case you haven't noticed, the date of the winter hang is in a tie. So...Not only do we not know where we're going, we don't know when we're going there. It would be real nice if some one who knows the area would get a little stronger than merely polite and diplomatic and argue strongly in favor or against one or the other of the locations. Otherwise, we may politely freeze our buns off.

O.K., As I was typing, Slowhike was giving us the benefit of his experience and wisdom. Jack (Pan) has spoken. I have been to Wise and it was great, and even though I'd lke to go somewhere new, I think we'd be well advised to follow the advice of those who know. Therefore, even though I voted for Old Orchard, I'd like to throw my vote with Slowhike and Pan and vote for Wise. Who among us knows better than Slowhike and Pan?

By my count: My Old Orchard vote withdrawn (No re-vote) Doug's changed vote from Old Orchard to Wise means as of 23:25 today, the vote is 8 for Wise, 9 for Old Orchard.

    Thank you for playing

On a different note, IF I get to go, I have a REALLY REALLY REALLY NICE van to drive to wherever we are.
