New to Hammocking - Whoopie Sling Questions

Like the subject says, I am brand new to the world of Hammocks. In fact, I haven't even gotten a chance to hang yet. I recently got a Yukon Outfitter Double Hammock, 2 black Diamond Neutrino carabiners, and 2 am steel whoopie slings. My question is, do I need tree straps in order to set up my hammock? I have watched a lot of videos, and I see majority of hammockers using them and then using a marlin hitch with a toggle. I did not know if this was necessary or not.

I am open to any suggestions as to suspension set ups and things like that. Also open to suggestions for things to purchase in order for me to get started.

The short answer is yes. This will give you the smallest natural footprint, which insures ham mocking can continue and flourish. Swing by harbor freight and pick some ratchet straps up, two of them, for about 4 bucks. Cut the buckle off and your set.

Yes, you definitely need tree straps of at least 1" width. Tree straps spread out the pressure on the tree, thereby protecting the cambium layer just under the bark. If it weren't for trees, we wouldn't have hammocks, so be kind to the trees.

Equally important is the perception of not harming trees. Many places ban hammocks due to the fear of tree damage. These fears were started by ground campers stringing up wire clotheslines or rope tie-outs to party tarps, driving spikes into trees, etc., and leaving half of it behind. Also by hammockers using thin lines with no straps to hang from. For the authorities, it's easier to regulate a rule that says, don't touch a tree. As a community, we are trying to get hammocks excluded from such rules, primarily by using tree straps and demonstrating that we are not harming the trees.

Wow thank you for the quick replies. I did not realize how much tree straps help ensure that a tree is protected. I will definitely go and look into that.

As for picking up a ratchet strap from harbor freight, would I just wrap it around the tree and then use the marlin hitch method?

Hey pheonix, please elaborate on using a trailer strap from Harbor freights. I have multiple trailer straps but I don't recall any of them having a loop sewn into one end. What's the trick?

I used ratchet straps originally also. On the end where the hook is there is a sewn loop. You have to cut the hook off with a hack saw or a cut off tool.

Most of our cottage vendors sell tree straps and tree huggers that are excellent for hanging hammocks. If my memory is right, tree huggers have loops on both ends and tree straps have a loop on on end. Since they are made for hanging, they will be strong enough with a built in safety factor and they will also fit most hardware that you might get later. But lots of hangers use harbor freight and other straps with great success.
