I'm picturing a 2 tone tarp.. Half Tawny Olive, half Olive Yellow.. During fall, when the trees turn (mostly yellow) I use the Tawny side toward trails etc to blend in better... During Early spring, I use the Olive Yellow side towards people to blend in with new growth.. HyperD 300 Olive Drab for the reinforcements.

No, no double layered tarps for me

Although I was working on an Asym tarp that fold out to a hex tarp for a little while:

    IMG_0035.JPGIMG_0036.JPGIMG_0038.JPGIMG_0037.JPG

The only purpose behind it: I love using asym tarps in everything but the rain WHile I've been lucky this year, and not had a lot of rain with my minimal tarp.. every so often I get unlucky

I like the added visibility and airflow an aysm tarp gives me. I've just never been willing to risk the materials in the off chance the tarp idea doesn't work.

Actually yes there have been some delays with that but we're looking at around 6/15.

I've gotten a few PM's/emails asking for clarification on the "fold out tarp" design I spoke of..

So here's what I meant.. (and I apologize for hijacking the thread)

Instead of binding the edges with Grosgrain, you use Omnitape, on the inside portion.. this would reinforce the edge, and allow you to seal up the tarp when folding it in half for a minimalist ASYM approach. This is by no means a weight saving tarp.. and I still have no idea if it'd actually work.

I still think a Tawny Olive / Olive Yellow tarp would be sweet.

Is Silpoly objectively better than SilNylon?

The most significant difference is the silnylon stretches, especially when wet from rain or dew, and silpoly does not. This means your tarp won't go limp in the night, which would require restating or self-tensioning guy lines. None of that is needed with silpoly.
