    Greetings from Florida!

Fairly new to backpacking and camping in general. Memorial day weekend i went camping with my gf and a friend of ours and he brought his hammock. Set up the whole thing (tarp, bugnet) and i got mesmerized by it. We (gf and I) realized that we have the same hammocks at home. So i got myself the profly tarp, bug net and we have the ENO double nests with Atlas straps. Needless to say i am pretty stocked about the prospect of hanging but its sad that theyre probibited in the state of Florida.

Double check your source about them being banned in Florida. A few years ago there was a trial / test run conducted and they were allowed. Many rangers were not aware until pointed in the right direction. There were special guidelines written ... 2" tree straps, if I am recalling correctly.

I am sure some Florida hanger will chime in shortly with better recollection.

    Welcome to the madness.

You can use hammocks in Florida. If you use them in a state park, you have to use straps that are at least 2" wide for attaching both your hammock and your tarp to the tree.

    Welcome!

Welcome aboard from Lakeland. Most of we hangers in Florida, there are some diehards, give up hanging during the summer. Check out the trip planning southeast section starting in the fall. We try for 6 to 8 group hangs ,10 to 15 people, thru the fall/winter/spring seaason. Though there are a number of hangers in the south end of the state a good number travel up here to central Florida to hang. Hope to meet on the trail soon.
Most of us end up poorer here but richer for being here. Olddog, Fulltime hammocker, 365 nights a year.

Welcome to the forums! You have plenty of time to figure out your gear setup before our Florida weather is tolerable! As mentioned, State Parks (not forests or wildlife management areas, etc) require 2" straps for both hammock and tarp. Otherwise, just use your normal 1" wide strap for the hammock and clothesline material of choice for the tarp. Enjoy the ride and hope to meet you on the trail one day.

Welcome to the forum from Tampa. I am one of those that take a break during summer. Too hot for my taste.

Hanging in Florida during the summer sure can be miserable. I remember when I talked my wife into do a summer trip to Torreya SP we ended up packing out at 2am because she couldn't handle the "chilly" 85 degree temps in her Jungle Hammock. She called it a "hanging sweatbox".

Some SPs in FL have some weird regulations stating "tents only". For those situations I've always instead decided to ask for forgiveness than permission (while still using the approved 2" straps). I'll pick some District Land or State Forest over a State Park any day (and cheaper!)

About 2 years ago I made a rule that I wouldn't camp in Florida during the summer unless it was on a river (Suwannee, St Mary's or Ichetucknee). Too. Dang. Hot.
