I have not used the stuff for anything? I guess what I wonder is what is the disadvantage of this material.

I do not know the weight but it will stuff into a quart ziplock bag.
Taffeta is just plain weave fabric and can be any weight or material afaik. If you mean the tablecloth type I think it's 2.2oz/y. Wether that is "heavy" or not depends on what you're shooting for... for UL backpacking you can do better, but for car camping it'll be fine. It'll pack down quite small, maybe under 2 litres. An 11'x5' hammock will weigh roughly 14-15oz before suspension.
I think the poly taffeta hammocks from tableclothsfactory.com are 2.6 ounces, and 15.5 ounces for a 60" x 126" tablecloth.

What they said. I think a (tablecloth) hammock that's under a pound is decent, and it packs down pretty small. I'm willing to carry it backpacking, anyway.
Then again, I don't exactly ultralight...
My tablecloth with suspension and straps is right at or just a tad bigger than a 1 liter bottle. It's in a spare Thermarest stuff sack I got out of the damaged/returned goods box at a random sporting goods store.
