Stupid TQ Question - tight against you or left loose with air space?

I have a 40* TQ with 2oz of overstuff. I went camping and the first night was into the low 50's I think. I was cool for a few hours but finally warmed up. next night was low 60's and I like to have cooked in my own juices. same clothing, etc. I began to think that maybe I wasn't used to using a TQ as this was my first real outing with it. Is it supposed to be loose where there's an air gap between you and the quilt, or pulled tight against you?

Feet were ok both nights, this was more of a core temp issue. Just curious what you guys do with your TQ placement

I generally just drape it over me and tuck it under on the sides, but its never really tight. If you pull it too tight I'd imagine the down would get compressed and reduce the loft, reducing the quilts ability to trap your body heat.

A 40* TQ with 2 oz. overstuff is easy to vent (even with sewn footbox). Just kick it off. I've always found it easy to vent a TQ no matter what the temp.

The more air there is inside your quilt or sleeping bag, the less efficient your installation will be because you have to heat up that air. Also any movement will has a billowing effect creating the need to heat up the new air.
