"Climb the mountains and get their good tidings.
Nature's peace will flow into you as sunshine flows into trees.
The winds will blow their own freshness into you, and the storms their energy,
while cares will drop away from you like the leaves of Autumn." — John Muir
You still have time for the Amazon Kelty deal.
What did you come up with at tractor supply?
One of these days I should post up what I did with 2mil painters drop cloth (plastic) and clear duct tape. It is passed down as I have a SuperFly on the way, but it has been my only tarp for fair weather camping for the last two years.
I second the harbor freight or wally world 9x11. My boy scouts are starting with them.
I've tried painters' plastic drop cloth. I found it cheap, but extremely fragile, with holes forming if I looked at it funny.
I've used polycro (colorless, clear shrink wrap insulation for windows) in the 1.2 mil thickness. I took a 5 x 17' piece, cut it in half and taped to make a 8.5 x 10 +/-. Very strong unless you drag it on a rock or sharp twig, which will start a tear. My last night out, I ground camped with it. It held out well during a night in which 4" of snow fell.
I'd personally go with blue tarp 8x10 or 9x12 from Ace, True Value, Home Depot or Lowes as a very durable one-time solution that will give you a great first hammock camp. You can lighten up later on with sil-nylon or something else later.
+1 on the Wally blue tarp. While your there, pick up some foam earplugs and you won't need to worry about the noise.
