    Hammock stand idea

Ok, the link isnt working, but the idea is two aluminum poles about 6 or 7 foot long spread out at the bottom and fastened at the top with two ropes staked down on the opposite side of the fastened hammock on both sides. Its the typical treeless set up. Im thinking of sectioned poles light enough to backpack. Any thots on this design? Thanx, bill

I suspect any place the tubing joins is going to be a weakness in the design. I would think the fewer pieces you can use in each leg the stronger it will be. Not being an engineer I don't know that for sure. Something to think about,
I may be slow... But I sure am gimpy.

Yes! It's 7' aluminum poles from the hardware store in Lexington, NC. I haven't tried them with one pole at each end, but that will work just as well, once the poles are staked out.

Note that no hitch or lashing will stay fast on an aluminum pole. I had to first wrap them in cloth tape, and then lash them.

Here's a commercial version made by Madera.

I have done the same thing several times with 6 foot fiberglass tubes. It works well.

Oh, any of these would do just fine.

On a serious note, I've found that the largest orange stakes at home depot will work in backyard type soil. In many hiking areas, you would need to bring chunks of rebar and a sledge; you just ain't getting plastic or aluminum to penetrate. I've actually found the one tree hang to work better if you have something( rock, stump, etc.) to tie off to.
