Hi everybody.
I just purchased a 20 degree burrow quilt from Hammock Gear with a modification that a few of you might be interested in. Some might find it pointless.
The quilt is a great ultralight piece of gear, using no more square footage than neccesary. I added a system to keep the quilt closed in a different configuration than usual. This helps it to stay closed as a sort of robe / sitting pyramid that encloses the whole body.
I sit around in camp a lot (outside of the hammock) - it is one of my main motivations for getting into the mountains. This quilt modification helps me keep warm while sitting around camp in cold weather.
Use:
Best used for sitting around camp.
Advantages:
Keeps entire body heat in. Easily ventable. Can adjust to lower and upper body.
Weight:
Overall, the modification added about two ounces to the quilt. There are probably lighter methods, but this worked with the original design and was a standard construction technique.
Future Modifications.
One can stick an arm out of the bottuned seam. If a short arm slit were to be added on the opposite side, then you have created a type of hooded poncho which could be worn around camp. In the future I would add some type of string-style hood former.
Below are some pictures that show the design and clossed seam and "hood"
