    Dew protection

Tried out a new hammock last night and thought it would be great to go without a tarp so that I could see the stars as I drifted off to sleep. Got up this morning around 5:30am wet from the dew. I thought perhaps the bugnet would be enough to keep me somewhat protected. Lesson learned... it's not.

I've never been good at interpreting weather situations. I basically prepare for the worst conditions that could possibly happen so I'm protected no matter what. However, being able to see the sky was pretty cool. So what's the best way to know if dew is going to be an issue in the morning? I liked not having the tarp. I did not like waking up wet. Any expertise you could share would be greatly appreciated.

Here is a great read that fully explains the dynamics at work
    http://windowoutdoors.com/WindowOutd...0Radiation.htm

As for managing things on clear nights....hang the tarp high and let it get soaked and hope that the hammock and your wares hold enough heat to not fall below dew points.
Minimize radiant losses is key.....nylon things have a tendency to cool way faster than air temps hence getting soaked. Breezy nights equalize things

Other choice is use a fabric blanket (like fleece or a polyester).....something that is made up of many fibers...and hang it over the ridge line and let it drape over everything....it will get some moisture on/in it but will not become a dripping mess like a nylon tarp or cover.

Or just live with the dew just to have the view...it all dries rather quickly once the big ball of fire returns..

I'm always tempted to not deploy my tarp on clear nights, but here in Florida humidity, any night has a high potential for condensation.

It's a rare night when temps don't drop to dew point. I rely on weather forecasts. hanging tarp high and in porch mode gives you a fair view while still affording some protection against the dew.

Sbeauchamp. For a great view of the night sky try a clear see through tarp. Poly cro? Or use clear plastic. Sorry I could not remember the exact names of plastic. Or set tarp ridge line and deploy tarp from either snake skins or stuff sack just before you konk out. Or just snap two frog togg ponchos together and deploy them on hammock ridge line just before nodding off to sleep.
